Water heater in a rental unit was off for several weeks; now when it’s been turned on it is giving an error code that translates to “Error in the hot surface ignitor circuit.” The manual says to: 1) Check that all wiring is correct and secure; and 2) Replace hot surface ignitor. Nothing has changed with the wiring, so the logical answer would seem to be that I need to replace the hot surface ignitor–but the water heater is only 18 months old. The manufacturer will do a service call, but I have to pay for the labor cost, even if the part is under warranty. Any suggestions?
