Why aren’t solar and wind power used as the main source of energy in America?

I never really understood why this would even have to be asked. The sun is free and has almost unlimited energy potential. For that matter, why do solar panels cost so much? Is is just because they are not commonly made? If everyone had solar panels on their own homes, it would significantly decrease the amount of energy that needs to be produced by power companies.

generator and alternator for wind turbine?

i’m building a electric wind turbine for a school project, and i have everything but the generator/alternator. does anyone know exactly what i need to generate electricity from a source that spins at various speeds, and where i can get those supplies? all i need is the electric stuff, i have everything else figured out. and don’t tell me its not possible, i’m basically done

Can a viable alternative power source truly be found?

So far we have not found an actual alternative power source other than what has already been discovered (hydro-electricity, nuclear power, fossil fuels, solar power etc.). The new sources of power are all power vectors (resultant from indirect use of one kind of power already in use. Is there some kind of power supply that we haven’t found yet that will carry us into the future? Gravitational wave energy? Nucleonic resonance?

Why not hydropower?

If hydropower is the clean energy source that it has always been, why not find new ways to use it in places where it wouldn’t displace anyone like in secluded rural areas? They would make excellent tourist attractions for fishing and scenery. Another thing I ran across is that all too often the water that could be used to generate power just goes over the top of the dam instead of running it through the generators. I want to hear the common person’s opinion on why or why not to use these almost free energy sources.

Can society function with free energy?

Earlier this year two engineers claimed to have invented a free, infinite, waste-free source of energry.

Assuming that they’re right, what would be the implications, nationally, internationally, financially and politcally?

Would society as we know it be able to survive?
