I have a ’65 Mustang with an 8″ rear end, and the ring gear is history. I am either going to have it rebuilt with new gears, bearings, etc., or buy a whole new third member (possibly adding posi).

I’m not sure of the current gear ratio, but it is probably stock. I know that the gear ratio will affect the performance, and I want something that has some take-off power, but doesn’t wind out when I’m tooling down the highway, plus I’d like to keep the mileage from getting too ridiculously low.

I’ve got a three-speed transmission, and a 4.7L 289 V-8 w/holley 4-barrel carb.
I’m pretty sure the transmission is a C4, I had it rebuilt not too long ago (unfortunately the guy who did it, and would be rebuilding my third member died of cancer last year).

The performance was pretty good off the line with the existing gear, but it does get some highway miles–nothing sustained, but if I drive it to work it’s about 20 miles, and it would be nice to not have it wound out too badly. Eventually I should probably give myself more than a 3 gear range in the transmission.

I will post the existing gear size once I count the teeth and I will verify the tire size.
