you know those radios and lamps that work by winding a handle? are there any other machines like that?

i don’t see why we couldn’t also have tv, fridge, ac, anything, working that way. no more electric bills. just have a winding gear by the la-z-boy that attaches to the whole electronics in the house and give it a wind every few hours. family or roommates could take shifts so you wouldn’t have to get up from sleep to wind the fridge, etc. i’m trying to get away from power bills. generators are too noisy and solar panels are too expensive. also i’m in florida and dreading losing power for a week throughout hurricane season. anybody know a website or store that sells things that go on wind-up power? other alternatives to electricity? thanks!

Who needs to take responsibility for this?

I work at a Korean Elementary School and the school provided me with housing. I live in a “shatek”. A week ago I went on vacation in Busan and gave the school’s administation office the numbers of people I would visit there as well as the number of the hotel I would stay at in any case of emergency. Then the area I stay in had a power failure. I came back to a stinking home, because the fridge was off and I lost all my frozen veggies and meats. The TV also didn’t survive the power failure. The “shatek” is very old and needs a lot of work, but the school doesn’t want to take any responsibility for fixing it up. The only thing they did was put on new wallpaper. The water leakages and the lack of an aircon are driving me nuts! Should the administration office pay for my losses and any work done (and paid) by myself on the place?

Dose a full refrigerator use more enegry than a empty one?

This has a similar feel to the “does the use of a power inverter while driving a car dramatically decrease gas mileage?” question. But the question at hand is: does a refrigerator use more energy when it’s full as compared to when it is empty. My thinking is that it does. If there is one water bottle in the fridge and one outside of it, the one in the fridge has used the cold air in the fridge to cool itself down, while the one outside has obviously not, but if you put the second one in the fridge that bottle will use the cold air in the fridge to cool itself down as well. Now the fridge has to supply twice as much cool air to cool both bottles than it would it there was only one. (I use the term “air” loosely)

I would love to hear what every one has to say… especially if I’m right… my girlfriend has taken the opposing side.

Thanks.

Costly not to have an energy efficient fridge?

We just got a fridge from some friends, and it’s an older fridge (20 years old). It’s still in great condition, but the prev. owner said it just wasn’t energy efficiant. We got it for free, so we’re not too concerened, expecially since we can’t afford a new one right now. Do you know how much a difference it will make in our electric bill? Right now, on average, ours is about $70 (because we’re not using air or heat).
Sorry, I didn’t mean that our bill is $70.00 with the fridge. We just picked it up tonight, and we haven’t even used it yet. Our bill is currently $70.00 (for MID Modesto Irrigation districtn is what we use for air/heat). I just don’t know how much it’s going to go up.

Free Energy Fridge ….and me yammering on about its coolness

I make a fridge. ….that uses no electricity. ….or anything like that. booya.

Rental payments when the apartment has no power or water due to flooding?

I live in Illinois and was affected by the floods. My apartment is on the second floor and all I lost was my food in the fridge, but I still don’t have power or water. It has been 2 weeks and looks to be even longer before it is habitable. What are the laws regarding paying rent for the time I am out of my apartment?
