Home damaged, VICTIMS of 2002 Rodeo/Chediski fire. Have NO adequate electric power or running water for over 3 yrs. FEMA lied to them for 2 yrs. telling them they would help them and get others to help them also. Home received $58,000 in damages. Were given $2,726 total. SBA, HUD, Red Cross, many others walked away from them without giving them any assistance whatsoever. Told them they were TOO POOR to obtain any Grants or Loans to repair their home. (income $600 /mo.) Roof leaks, damaged ceilings, walls (mold) and floors. Wheelchair ramps needed, decks and steps removed need replaced, now very unsafe, falls frequent. Lost their Solar/Wind electric power system and generators. NO running water. They need gas and propane.. NO working heat or A/C system, house low 40′s to high 30′s in winter. Summer 105 to 108 degrees inside, conditions difficult for healthy people. Disabled they’re in pain because of their situation. Anyone know if legal Pro Bono help is available for them or worth it??
(NOT on reservation Julie)..They thought they had insurance coverage they tried to place claim, their AARP insurance Co. reneged, got nothing. All agencies and others tell them to contact Local assistance, there is NONE… Apache County AZ is poorest county in country. Moving, NOT a good idea, they want independence and living costs are more affordable where they are on their own. They do NOT want to be living off others and have you pay $3,000 each month or more for their care. Does anyone know where they might get their property refi’d so they can replace their electric power system ?… All they have found are rip-off people that want to take advantage of them.
We all have tried to locate local and distant assistance… there just is NONE, at least NOT for the POOR. Cattle rancher politicians of this area are able to get $90,000 from DOA for not growing cattle…while the poor are unable to obtain DOA Home repair loans and grants of up to $27,500 that they should be eligible for.
