China reduces solar power costs with large-scale manufacturing

Over the past decade, China has become the world’s leading manufacturer of solar energy technologies; China’s solar manufacturers have helped drive down the cost of solar power around the world with their large-scale production facilities and solar panel exports. In October, ClimateWorks traveled to China to get a sense of the scale of China’s solar manufacturing efforts and talk to some local experts about China’s goals for dramatically scaling up its domestic deployment of solar energy technologies.

Other than nuclear weapons, which modern weapon is more destrutive and which country owns it?

Methane to be taken from lake to produce power(Rwanda )?

(China5e, Aug 3, 2006) Rwanda is planning to use a unique resource – vast amounts of methane trapped in a layer of water deep in Lake Kivu – to double its current power output and drastically cut harmful emissions.

In a pilot project this month a specially commissioned barge will be floated out into the lake on the border with Democratic Republic of Congo. A pipe will be lowered to 300 metres (985ft) where, as a result of volcanic and bacterial activity, the water contains an estimated 55bn cubic metres of methane. In a simple process – a Belgian-made plant has extracted small amounts of methane from the lake for 40 years – the gas will be sucked out and piped back to shore.

The pilot is the first phase of a £48m partnership between Rwanda’s government and Dane Associates, a UK-registered consortium that will build a power plant near the lake to turn the methane into electricity.

Powering China?

(Sierraclub.org, Aug 17, 2006) China is now the 2nd biggest consumer of electricity in the world, after the U.S., and most of that power comes from coal. That’s the bad news. The good news is that the Chinese leadership knows it has a problem and is taking some steps to rein in the country’s burgeoning fossil fuel appetite. To cite one example, the government has mandated the use of solar power to heat water in all new housing construction in the booming city of Shenzhen. By 2010, according to official reports, half of the new buildings in the economic power house will have solar water heating systems, while 20 percent of them will use solar power for generating electricity. Let’s hope it’s just the beginning of a much wider trend.

In what ways is the U.S. working toward an alternative fuel source?

A recent article I read said that India and China are making monumentous steps towards using wind power, an 47% increase in India and 65% in china from their previous year. While coal is still the main form of energy for these countries, they are making big investments in alternative energy.

I am wondering if the U.S. is making any major headway in alternative energy, especially since we are one of the top countries that consume coal. Would be nice if you can also link your statistics.

Does anyone else also think that the hybrid cars on the market are only a short term solution? Should it only be considered a transitional phase to fully electrical cars?
Just curious also, are oil companies buying out people that are developing alternative energy tech? Are they developing them after they buy them? Sources please, I dont like to blame without having hard facts.
